A restored but still old hand saw is painted with an old mill by a country stream, a few leaves cling to the barren trees - fall is just about over. Orange and rust colored leaves on old oak trees near the bank of a trickling stream lead your eye to an old mill just around the bend. The evergreens in the distance lead us to believe we are somewhere out in the country away from civilization, and there is a chill in the air.

The blade itself is approx 11.5" long with the handle extending beyond the blade for a total of 14.5" on your wall, and at the highest point the handle plus blade is 4" high.

The wooden handle is lovingly stripped, sanded and rubbed gently with 5 coats of linseed oil to make it look like new again. make these from rusty old junk saws I find at yard sales and swap meets, which have to be sanded, stripped, sealed with a rust preventative and then painted. I now have a collection of medallions, handles, blades and screws that I compile for a finished piece which then gets the acrylic paint of an appropriate scene. Then several final coats of varnish, usually matte or satin, are applied to preserve the finish of the painting on the blade. Oh, and I also paint the back to assure that rust will not reappear at a later date. Finally we attach the handle.

The handle on this one is very plain and simple. The screws are silver colored and buffed to a high shine.

This piece of folk art would be particularly impressive in a country living room or mountain cabin. Is it tole painting? Decorative art? Fine art? Vintage? I know if I painted it on a canvas it would be "art" but I love these old found treasures, and have enjoyed bringing them to life in a new reincarnation. -- Penny
