Acanthus leaves look a little like the leaves of thistles or poppies. In Ancient Greece and Rome they're the main decorative ornament on column capitals – that's the sticky-outy bit at the top.

The Greek architect and sculptor Callimachus was the first person to decorate using acanthus leaves. He visited a cemetery one day and saw a basket left on the grave of a young girl, holding some of her toys. An acanthus plant had grown through the woven basket; it's spiny, deeply cut leaves entwining the girl's belongings. Because of this story the acanthus came to symbolise immortality.

If that little girl had lived, she might have grown up to wear a pair of dainty acanthus earrings. The delicate acanthus motif is inspired by classical sculptural forms and is surrounded by tiny fresh water pearls. Each earring is suspended from a sterling silver earwire.

If you're looking for a unique set of jewelry to wear at your wedding or another formal occasion, these earring can be paired with the Acanthus Pendant: http://www.etsy.com/listing/80740187/acanthus-leaf-silver-and-pearl-pendant
