The classic story of Hans Brinker or, The Silver Skates, is the story of a brother and sister in Holland who wish to compete in an ice-skating race in spite of the adversity facing them. It was written by Mary Mapes Dodge in the 1860's. It's been printed in many formats and illustrated by many artists, but to find any book with Maginel Wright Enright illustrations is always a treat.

This book is a David McKay publications from 1918. It's a larger format book -- 9.5 by 7.25 inches -- and is 345 pages long. In additon to the color plate on the cover and the illustrated title page, there are 8 full-page color plate illustrations by Enright. While she worked in the art nouveau era, I find her style, especially in this book, to be very much influenced by the Japanese prints owned by her older brother Frank Lloyd Wright.

A lovely vintage book for the winter season and perhaps a nice gift for someone of Dutch heritage?

This hardcover book shows some rubbing and marking on the pastedown cover illustration, but it is still very nice. There is a bit of bending at the tips of the book, but very little rubbing at the edges. The major flaw to the exterior is at the bottom of the spine at the rear, the cloth covering is faded and bubbled, with a small 1/4 inch tear. I don't know if this was water damage, damage from being pulled off the shelf, or both. (This book does not have any odor that I normally associate with water or dampness damage.)

The interior has no inscriptions and no rips or tears. The pages show some age-related darkening. On page 106, there is some soiling in places along the bottom 1/3 of the page. (It is pictured.) The binding is good and the pages are all securely attached. This 93-year-old book is in solid condition.
