This is a lushly illustrated 1947 Random House edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. There are 20 lovely, beautifully detailed color illustrations by artist Mahmoud Sayah; the borders of every page are adorned by designs printed in gold-colored ink of animals--butterflies, deer, flamingos, tigers, and peacocks.

This book is in good condition for its age, but has several flaws, none of which greatly mar its overall appearance: On the edges of the pages, some staining and browning is apparent (see pictures 1 and 2). On the title page (see picture 3) there is a thinning of the paper and some slight staining, as though a sticker or a bit of writing in permanent ink had been removed. Also, some faint blue marks on the left-hand side of the front end papers (see picture 4) from someone having traced around a shepherd and a plant in blue colored pencil. Lastly, there is some sun-fade and worn areas to the book's cover, bumped corners, and some staining of the fabric of the book's cover and spine (see picture 5). Other than these mild imperfections, the book is gorgeous.

(The wire bookstand seen in the photographs is not included.)

Whether you admire this book for its romantic, rebellious (especially for its time) poetic content or its incredible illustrations--or both--this is an exquisite book to cherish and own.
