This is an amazing piece of art, I was so excited to find it!!! This is a beautiful color woodblock print done by Japanese artist Kaoru Kawano in the 50s.
Kaoru Kawano was an active print maker from mid-1940s to the early 1960s. He was a student at the Kawabata Art School and because his early works showed such great promise, they were displayed at the Nihon Hanga Kyokai Exhibition (Japan Print Society) in 1944. He moved to Tokyo in 1958, and participated in several international competitions and solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle and Chicago. Although Kawano carved many different subjects, he is best known for his representations of children.
As a sosaku hanga artist, he not only designed his woodcuts but also carved the blocks and printed his own impressions. Although his blocks are expressively carved, often making aesthetic use of the existing wood grain, his images are nonetheless gentle and reflective.
This print has been called "Fan" or "Little Geisha" done in color woodblock with mica overlay. It is signed in pencil and has a red monogram chop.
The print measures 15" x 9-1/4" and the frame measures 20" X 14".
The print is in excellent condition. When I found it the mat had a light stain, so I had a new mat cut and replaced the cardboard backboard with an archival quality one. I removed the original foil sticker which says Frames Kaigado Aoama Tokyo, and re-glued it to the new backboard.
The frame is original to the print and is in okay condition, but not the best. There are a few chips in the red laquer at the top and bottom and some of the joints are a little loose. I like the way it looks in this not so perfect frame, but the option always exists to have it reframed.
It is a gorgeous piece of art, you will not be disappointed.
