There are over 750 pages with hundreds of illustrations (many of which being full-page plates) included within this expansive volume. The secret society of Freemasonry and its practices are convincingly traced back thousands of years in this obscure and interesting book. This exceedingly rare copy of “Freemasonry in the Holy Land” was printed in 1879, less than 15 years after the end of the Civil War, and is a first edition printing of the “Monumental Edition” which is highly sought after. Known as a ½ leather edition, this book is beautifull bound in calf skin leather, with calf leather corners and spine as well. All 3 exterior page edges are gilt in gold, and the spine / cover boards have vibrant gold ruling.

The front and reverse interior have beautifully marbles pages, and the inside of the front cover board has an interesting certificate pasted. The certifcate is filled out in stylish Victorian cursive, and establishes that the original owner was a member in full standing of the Masonic Holy Land League. The gold text and symbolism on the spine is full and vibrant. The Gold gilt page edges are vibrant, but do have some nicks, and small indentations. The binding is tight, the hinges are fully intact and solid. All pages are present and clean, with absolutely no internal markings other than mentioned.

Author, Robert Morris LLD, was the founder of the Order of The Eastern Star, a famous Masonic lecturer / author, Past Grand Master of Kentucky, and First Master of the Royal Solomon Mother lodge, Jerusalem. Over time a black and white engraving of Morris in the front of the book has burned itself into the pages on either side of the image like a ghostly shroud of Turin transfer. Overall this 133-year-old book is in excellent vintage condition, and is becoming nearly impossible to find in this state of high quality preservation. The inner fly leaf contains a beautiful cursive inscription dated 1879 (see picture #5), and the coverboards have a few small waterspots (see picture #2).
