Offered is a handsome polychrome French transferware plate dating to the late 19th Century.* The central scene in a handsome sepia transfer is titled "L'Arrive Du Colonel Doods Au Warff de Kotonou." It satirizes the African campaigns of the Senegalese-born Colonel Doods (or "Dodds" by most accounts) who lead the French to victory in the provence of Dahomey in the 1890s. The caption translates loosely to: "Colonel, the king promises peace while you're there....he'll be happy to see you....if he doesn't come out, we'll search for him at Abomey!" The king referred to is Behazin, who lead a strong resistance against the French. You can read more about him here:

The unusual border design features clusters of cherries on the branch intertwined with leafy fronds in a striking teal blue. The plate measures 8-1/2 inches in diameter with gently scalloped rim. The "H.B. & Cie" backstamp is for Hautin, Boulenger & Company of Choisy Le Roi, France.

Condition is Very Good. It appears this plate was used for display only, as we see no utensil marks. Colors are crisp and glaze has a nice glossy shine. There is fine overall crazing, with some slight age darkening visible at the top of the well. It displays beautifully!

*We have a companion plate from this series listed in our shop; I'm happy to offer a discount if you'd like both.
