This is a life size Spotted Sandpiper silhouette decoy.

Decoys such as this were used in the late 1800s and early 1900s to attract shorebirds into shotgun range. The silhouette decoy is a very simple decoy, essentially a thin board cut to match the profile a bird and painted to match the species. As simple as they look, this style of decoy can be very effective at attracting birds. With the passage of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in 1918 shorebird hunting was outlawed and the shorebird decoy made obsolete except as an art form.

This decoy has been hand shaped with a knife and left somewhat rough so that the tool marks can still be seen. It was then painted with acrylic paints and sealed with acrylic sealer. The eyes are simple painted eyes and the beak and leg are made of oak dowel for added strength. For stability the base is made from a piece of worm scarred Kentucky red cedar that I salvaged after an ice storm toppled many trees.

The decoy is signed, numbered and dated on the base. I make these one at a time and they all have a slightly different texture, pose, and paint detail.

Shipping within the US is included in the price of this decoy!

Decoy size: 7.25” from beak tip to tail tip, 4” x 2.75” on the base, and 6.5” tall including the base, body of the decoy is .75” thick lumber.
