Offered is this lovely Faience Fine, or French Creamware, plate produced at Sarreguemines in France and modeled after English Creamware (sometimes referred to as "Faience Anglaise"). The style is quite similar to the Creil plates in our shop. The center scene shows a castle in the distant rocky hills, overlooking the small houses below and a scenic lake with sailboat. Here, the viewer is at a distance, presumably peeking from a spot to the right of and behind the trees picture in the left foreground.

The scene is framed by an ornamental border of leaves and flowers surrounded by diaper patterning around the outer rim. The deep black transfer is just stunning against the ivory colored body. It measures 8-1/2 inches across. The style of the impressed "Sarreguemines" mark on the back dates it to the 1865-1880 period.

Condition is EXCELLENT, with a beautiful high-shine glaze free from crazing. The colors are crisp and vibrant. The face shows only light utensil marks, with more wear to the back of the plate. The thinly potted but very sturdy earthenware body has a beautiful ring to it! This is a fabulous piece for the cabinet or wall display and would beautifully complement many styles of decor--I just love the black faience mixed with Staffordshire mulberry wares!
