Nina was having one of those dark gray as rain kind of days. She couldn't see the forest through the mess of her scraggly trees. She couldn't see the magic through the curtain of gloom. And the light at the end of the tunnel? Well, she was on mile 2 with about 800 to go. Not even close. Nothing in reach. No niceties to keep her push push pushing forward towards another day. When all this weight seemed too immense and overbearing, Nina hung her head to cry. But as the tears they started falling, Nina felt a flutter at her cheek. There, come to rest on her sweater in the spot just above her heart, a scrappy bit of butterfly, flap flap flapping it's wings in golden yellow glory. Butterfly, how do you do it, being so fragile in such a rough world? For an instant the butterfly stopped flapping, the antennas started twitching. Then those wings they started moving. Up and down and up and down. Slowly at first. Brown on bottom, yellow on top. Dark brown, bright yellow. Dark brown, bright yellow. Those wings they started moving faster and faster until all Nina could really see was bright yellow flashing like a beacon in the storm. Keep moving. Keep going. Keep steady. Keep strong. Butterfly caught the breeze moments later and fluttered out of sight. Nina smiled, feeling renewed. Signs of hope were all around her.
