Why these ingredients:

Bees Wax not only thickens a salve or lip balm, but reduces inflammation, softens skin, and has antioxidant properties; forms a protective network on the skin’s surface and also has a free radical-scavenging ability, i.e., fights harmful pollutants; it is an antiseptic, also. WATCH as may be a sensitive skin irritant.

Echinacea leaf is said to be anti-microbial; the whole plant considered beneficial for sores, wounds, burns, etc., possessing cortisone-like and antibacterial activity; mucilage is found in the leaves (http://www.botanical-online.com/Echinacea.htm)

Elder flower is a good tonic for all skins; reputed to soften skin and smooth wrinkles and soothe sunburn; an emollient, anti-inflammatory; for dry or chapped skin (contains rutin, glycosides, phenolic acids, triterpenes)

Mango Butter is obtained from the kernels of the mango tree. It has a high content of stearic acid which makes it similar to Cocoa Butter. Mango Butter has good emolliency and lends protection against the sun. It is said to prevent drying of the skin and formation of wrinkles. Mango Butter also reduces degeneration of skin cells and restores elasticity. Mango Butter's hardness makes it a great butter for stick formulations such as lip balm and lotion bars. It can be used "as is" to provide relief from the dryness of eczema and psoriasis.

Marshmallow root is a healing softener for dry, chapped, and sunburned skin (Rodale HERBS, Reader’s Digest, 1990); emollient due to its abundance of mucilage; anti-inflammatory; used for skin irritations (The Herbal Medicine Maker’s Handbook, James Green, The Crossing Press, 2000); contains phenolic acids, flavoniods, mucilage, and pectin.

Olive oil (I use only organic virgin olive oil – organic because it is just a few dollars more per 35 lb. box, and virgin, because after testing all three grades in castile soap, which uses 100% olive oil to make the soap, the virgin oil produced the most beautiful and effective soap, according to my customers.) is good for mature, inflamed, or dry skin, providing disinfectant, antiwrinkle, and wound healing properties. It retains moisture to the skin by forming a breathable layer, and like jojoba oil, shea butter, and kukui nut oil, it does not block the skin’s natural functions while performing its own. My aromatherapy book (Aromatherapy, A Complete Guide to the Healing Art, by Kathi Keville and Mindy Green) says this oil reduces stretch marks during pregnancy, provides 20% sunscreen, and WATCH as may be a sensitive skin irritant.

Sunflower oil is an emollient and lubricant with large amounts of vitamin e; moisturizing, antioxidant, penetrating, nourishing; WATCH as may be a sensitive skin irritant.

T-50 Tocopherols is a natural form of Vitamin E’s, whose most important task is to counteract oxidation (rancidity) in fats and oils, as well as prevent the occurrence of free radicals. The tocopherols operate and are active both in the product and on the person’s skin. Tocopherols protect against the side effects of radiotherapy and cytotoxins. Cells deficient in vitamin E and selenium are much more prone to oxidation and the formation of free radicals. Free radicals are formed during exposure to sunlight, during the breaking down of environmental pollutants and during the oxidation of oils when exposed to heat or sunlight. Vitamin E applied to the skin will penetrate it and take care of the free radicals. The vitamin will absorb the sun’s dangerous ultra-violet rays, which are responsible for the reddening of the skin, sunburn and more serious burns. Ultra-violet rays and the free radicals age the skin more quickly reducing its elasticity and creating wrinkles. Vitamin E therefore works to prevent wrinkles, stimulates the blood circulation and regulates the skin’s elasticity.

Natural Oils of Anise & Sweet Orange:

Anise: said to be calming, mildly hormonal, enhances emotional balance; BUT WATCH if you have problems related to high estrogen, and ANETHOL in anise may irritate sensitive skin.

Sweet Orange: said the scent of this oil counters depression, hysteria, shock, and nervous tension; WATCH as is slightly photo-sensitizing.
