This listing is for an incredible piece - an antique Ambrotype photograph in a leather case. The image is on the glass. It is trimmed in a beautiful and shiny brass trim and lined in a salmon-colored velvet that has surely faded from its original red. The original hinge and closure hook are still attached but the hinge is no longer working. The inside reads "J.Jeane's, 415 Market St., Wilmington, Del." The woman depicted is very handsome in her velvet frock with gorgeous handmade lace trim.

These photographs were often loving mementos given to those going on long journeys or to war. The process was invented in 1839 by a Frenchman, but quickly became popularized in America during the mid-Nineteenth Century. It is amazing to find something so old in such remarkable antique condition. I have had it in my collection for over 30 years and its now time that it found a new home.
