Civil War Era Nursing Corset

Thanks to input from a great client on Etsy, I was able to design a usable nursing corset. The corset she and I developed was based on a photograph of what we believe was an original period corset that she found. The photo is included in this listing. After several prototypes, trials, and lots of feedback, my client, a nursing mother herself, declared this a very functional and convenient nursing corset. Following is a part of her correspondence you might find helpful:

-----> "Now, nursing is a bit different in that the baby nurses kind of sitting up rather than lying recumbent in the cradle hold. I think this is primarily because stays force me into a better posture, so I'm sitting straight up instead of hunched" <-----

As with our other corsets in our line, it is made of heavy pre-washed cotton fabric. It laces up the back through 30 metal grommets. The two ties meet at the waist. It has 6 flexible metal bones and 4 flat metal bones sewn into pockets made of bias tape. (I've upgraded the design since taking the photos.) The top and bottom of the corsets are bound with bias tape. The materials I use provide enough strength to assure the proper shape and support while still allowing some degree of mobility. Hook and eye tape is used as the front closure. This method of closing the corset is equal in strength to busk, but allows more flexibility and provides a more economical product.

This nursing corset offers button closed vents on each side. The vent edges are finished in bias tape and close with two bone buttons. The bottom of the vent is reinforced - this is not shown in the photograph.

This corset is not available in the lined or formal style due to the construction requirements. However, grommets in the back and extra boning are available.

My clients and the quality of my products are very important. I welcome all correspondence from my customers. A big THANK YOU to "Jay" for all of your help, advice, time, and ideas in the development of this product!!!

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

The corsets are machine washable. I recommend line drying.

These corsets are not intended to drastically reduce your waist size. The corset is made to take the strain, but your body is not. For health reasons, I do not recommend taking more than four inches off of your waist size.

I include lacing instructions with each corset. This provides you with details on how to properly put on and wear your new corset. The instructions are printed on a bright colored slip of paper attached to your packing slip.

ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS

* Please provide your waist, bust, and hip measurements in inches by sending us an email after placing your order.

* The bust measurement, taken at the fullest part, can be taken while wearing a bra.

* Do not send your bra size, as these measurements can vary with manufacturers and may result in an improper fit.

* If you are long or short waisted, please send the measurement from your armpit to the top of your hip bone.

* Also feel free to include any additional information that you feel may be helpful.

* To send your measurements or if you have any questions, please contact us using the "Contact Seller" button above or email us at heathertreadle [!at] aol.com

OPTIONAL UPGRADES

* Extra Boning: If your bra cup size is larger than a "D", I recommend extra boning. I also recommend extra boning if your waist measurement exceeds 44 inches. If you wish to have extra boning, please purchase it in the listing labeled "Extra Boning for Working Corset".

* Grommets: If you would like to fasten with grommets rather than the lacing tape, please let us know. We can send you a PayPal invoice for $13.00, the cost of this upgrade.

SHIPMENT

This corset will be custom made for you. Please allow approximately two weeks from your order date for me to complete your corset. You will receive an email with the delivery confirmation number when the corset is ready to ship. Your corset will be shipped to you using Priority Mail.
