It's plump, round & orange, but it's not a pumpkin. It's an old ball pitcher, a jug for all seasons. In October, it can be disguised as a jack-o-lantern.

The ice lip and high handle made it easy to pour cold beverages from the tilted "ball" pitchers so popular beginning in the 1930s. The "547" molded into the unglazed base suggests this one was made by Red Wing Pottery. It's the right shape and size to be their "Plain" or "Gypsy Trail" pitcher. There is no manufacturer's name on it.

The bright red-orange surface has a slight orange-peel texture that is more noticeable in some areas. There is a glaze-skip where the handle connects (Photo 1). There are a couple of white pin dots also. There is an imperfection or a smooth chip at the left side of the spout. It might have been there since its manufacture.

The jack-o-lantern face was black fabric taped to the pitcher. It is not included, unless you'd like me to cut another funny funny face. Seriously, let me know!!!

The off-white interior has small crazing lines over the whole surface, and a few larger lines. The spout's ice stop has a line that looks like a crack on the underside of the half-inch bridge. But it has not reached the orange glaze on the top surface. I would use this as a vase or a display piece.
