*** PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION TO FULLY UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THESE AMAZING ANTIQUE SPECTACLES.

DESCRIPTION:

This is a truly amazing offering for one of the most UNIQUE and RARE pair of glasses/spectacles you will ever see. These are an extremely old antique pair of tinted spectacles made during the CIVIL WAR era. That makes these spectacles about 150 YEARS OLD. It is often hard to find spectacles from this era in decent condition - it is EXCEPTIONALLY RARE to find a pair with these AMAZING tinted lenses.

Here is an even RARER detail - these spectacles have a second set of lenses that can flip out to the side and provide side-view protection or can be worn doubled-up with the main lenses for a darker tint. You will also notice the finely detailed embellishments found on the earpieces with an ornate and intricate pattern etched into the slender glasses arms. This is one incredible and unique pair of glasses. They have no prescription or magnification. All of our research suggests that these may have been spectacles worn by a marksman/sharpshooter to shield his eyes from the sun while taking those highly skilled shots.

CONDITION:

LENSES:
Let's take some time to talk about condition. The lenses on this pair of goggles are in pretty decent condition, especially considering their extreme age. There are some light scuffs and a few fine scratches on the main lenses, but nothing significant enough to be seen while you are wearing these spectacles. There are more scuffs and scratches on the glasses I am wearing right now while I write this than are present on these 150 year old glasses. The flip-out lenses have even less to talk about. There are a few (2 or 3) small areas on the right lens where it looks like something rubbed against the glass making the lens a little less shiney in those spots, but for the most part they are clean and in extremely good condition - the left lens looks nearly new!

FRAMES:
The frames are all original and there is no breakage or damage to speak of. There is quite an interesting tale to tell with these frames. The frames around the lenses appear to be made out of brass with a sterling finish that has worn off of much of this area of the frames. The metal beneath the silver has a distinctly brass color and quality to it. The nose bridge is very typical of glasses from this era and all of the silver seems to be present and in beautiful condition.

EARPIECES:
When we get to the earpieces things get really interesting. These also appear to have been finished in silver, or perhaps it was platinum, but much of that silver color has worn off. The metal beneath is definitely NOT brass and looks unmistakably like GOLD. I am NOT making any guarantees, but I have been around enough jewelry and antiques to know what I am looking at. Perhaps gold was an easier medium for the intricate etchings that adorn these beautiful earpieces, or perhaps these were just "top-shelf" glasses of the day. Either way it is easy to see that these spectacles are very, very special. Please take a moment to enlarge the second photo to get an idea of the finely detailed designs that grace the earpieces. You have to keep in mind that these arms are only 2 MILLIMETERS WIDE. In this tiny space is a triple pyramid design that has a tiny beaded detail running along both the upper and lower borders of the earpieces. Simply spectacular. The earpieces end in a classic wrap-around ear wire that is light and springy and effortlessly comfortable.

Overall it should be said that, as stated, these glasses are extremely old and for that reason they posess a certain fragility. They should be treated with repect and handled with care. That being said, these are in very good condition particularly considering their extreme age. As an accessory, they look absolutely AMAZING. I have tried them on with the flip-out lenses in front and on the sides and they look utterly fantastic. If you want a truly spectacular look that CANNOT be rivaled, this pair will instantly put you at the front of the pack. You may be able to find other spectacles from this era, but you would be very hard pressed to find a pair with this stunning colbalt blue tint, and I doubt you would ever find a pair with the incredible feature of having flip-out lenses that can be worn to the side or be used to increase the amount of protection from the sun. These are as rare as they are beautiful, and only one lucky person will have a chance to call these their own.

MEASUREMENTS:
The spectalces measure approximately 115mm wide from hinge to hinge and the lenses measure a mere 23mm high by 34 mm wide, including the frames - please consider the dimensions when selecting any pair of goggles, and if you have a question please don't hesitate to ask.
