Beautiful 19th century hemp tablecloth with crocheted lace panels

This tablecloth has such charm, it evokes images of 19th century life around a big French farmhouse table - the stories it could tell!

This cloth is made from four large and four smaller panels of homespun, rustic hemp linen, joined together by wide bands of crochet with a pretty scallopped edging. The fabric is a soft, very pale beigey-white and the crochet work is in a cotton thread which is white. All entirely hand stitched and probably dating from the mid 19th century.

Often these cloths were made from sheets which have become damaged, the fabric of this cloth may well be older than the cloth itself and possibly dates to the early 19th century. Hemp like this is becoming rare indeed - this is quite a special piece.

Lovely to grace a summer table. Great for informal occasions but would also look very smart with a dark cloth underneath - red at Christmas?

In excellent condition, no damage. Some tiny marks on a couple of the panels.

Approximate dimensions: 55 inches (140 cm) wide x 83 inches (210 cm) long

Weight: 1140 grams
