This cast glass piece has the glow of a brilliant ruby in the soft form of a woman's face. She has an inspired smile and parts of her face and hair have been polished to a shine, contrasting with the ancient, earthy texture that makes sand cast glass unique. The glass is clear with the color fused onto the flat back, so depending on the viewing angle, it will appear crystal clear, or ruby red.

I first sculpted the clay head and fired it. The original is here

The face is modeled on a renaissance painting of Mother Mary. Once fired, I then made a special sand mold of it, ladled molten glass into the mold, sieved on some transparent red and orange glass frits and fused then on the back. I then loaded it into a kiln to slowly anneal for a week before grinding and polishing the lens like cheeks and the flat, stable bottom.

One of my favorites, I had to live with it for a few months before offering it for sale. The color, form and surface variations continue to draw me in and inspire me. Red is the most expensive color in glass because it is formulated with gold, and this is one of my most successful uses of the precious colorant.

It is 7 inches tall by 6.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches deep.

A very warm piece that does lovely things with light. A very fine and strong piece of figurative glass art with a classical sense of beauty.
