Septarians were formed approximately 110 million years ago when the Gulf of Mexico reached what is now southern Utah. Decomposing sea ( shell ) life, killed by volcanic actions had a chemical attraction for the sediment around them, forming mud balls. Tide and wave action rolled the balls around, increasing the size. As the ocean retreated, the balls were left to dry and crack. Because of their bentonite content, they also shrank, trapping the cracks inside. They were then covered with sediment. The ocean returned, depositing shell life above the balls. As this decomposed, calcite from the shells was carried down into the cracks and calcite crystals formed. A thin wall of calcite was formed into Aragonite, dividing the clay exteriors from the calcite center. The Nodules were first located east of Zion National Park in Utah. At one time you could walk thru the canyons and gather all the nodules you could carry. Today, this is no longer the case. It takes major excavating equipment to dig 40 feet below the surface to locate a nodule.
These amazing stones were collected approx. 50 years ago.
Etsy's own Lost Sierra has transformed these nodules into amazing cabochons for us to enjoy.

I have wrapped this amazing cabochon in 14K Gold Filled wire. I have 2 sizes of Sharkskin Jasper beads and Czech glass beads flowing down the side.

The finished pendant measures 1 5/8" wide x 3 3/4" high

For immediate wear-ability I have included a coordinating leather cord. Ready to wear right out of the box.
