This stunning queen-size afghan was designed and hand crocheted (by me!) It is made up of 182 tri-color granny squares which were then hand edged, sewn together, and given a double crochet border with a rich taupe yarn. The autumn colors used are endless...buttercup yellow, soft yellow, yellow-orange, harvest gold, muted gold, winter white, beige, tan, golden brown, chocolate brown, burgundy, claret, true red, orange-red, pumpkin orange, soft orange, burnt orange, fern green, pine green, avocado green, and taupe. I used 13 rows of 14 squares, so the bedspread can be turned either way and still have enough blanket to elegantly drape over both sides and the end, possibly cover the pillows as well. The finished dimensions of this afghan are approximately 86 inches X 78 inches, which may be large enough for a king size bed as well, depending on how much of the afghan is draped over the edges of the bed.
The yarns used are cotton, cotton blends, and acrylic blends, all machine washable. However, because it is so large, I would recommend using a commercial washer on gentle cycle and cold water, followed by a very low dryer setting. Most of the yarn I used came from half skeins or less from other projects, so the cost of materials is hard to calculate; however, I do know that I particularly loved the taupe color as an accent, so I bought yarn exclusively for that, which cost around $30 just to do the edges and borders. Once the material costs are subtracted, at 40 minutes to crochet just one square plus all of the piecing time, I don't dare to calculate the time it took to create this work of art!!! However, it was made as a true labor of love, because every minute I am crocheting is peaceful bliss to me!
I would be willing to custom order blankets similar to this if given 12 to 16 weeks to complete. Let me know your color scheme and I could put together some square samples, e-mail them to you for approval, and adapt accordingly. T
This beautiful crocheted afghan might easily become your family heirloom! Thanks for looking!
