A dreidel ("little spinning thing" in Yiddish; "sivivon" in Hebrew) is a four-sided top, played with during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. A dreidel has 4 Hebrew letters (Nun, Gimel, Hay, Shin), which tradition says represent the saying "A great miracle happened there", a description of the miracle of the drop of oil by with the Israelite temple's eternal light burned for 8 days.
With this pattern you can knit a dreidel that will be a wonderful addition to any dreidel collection, delight family and friends, and/or can be used (gently) to play with. Bring on the chocolate Hanukkah gelt.
Interfaith families can also make these as holiday ornaments. The finished knitted dreidel measures approximately 2.5" x 5.5.
