PIANO WOOD BOOKENDS

Who would have thought something so cotton-pickin' cute could come from the trash pile?

It's my passion to take the pieces of old pianos and make something useful and/or decorative out of them. But when it came to the piano desk (the wood that supports the keys), I honestly didn't know what I could do with it. Several desks have remained stacked in a corner of the garage for years, waiting for me to come up with an idea. One of them was particularly ugly, so I decided to cut it up (to fit it in the trash can) and throw it away. But as I cut, suddenly the pieces began to take shape. With the rounded edges, some pieces actually looked like books, and I realized I had a treasure.

From this one piano desk, I made four sets of bookends. The set in this listing is one of the largest, with each book measuring 7" tall x 2" wide x 5.5" deep. The musicians featured here are Victor Borge and Ray Charles. Additionally, each "book" is mounted to a metal bookend, for added stability when used for this purpose. But the bookends may be removed if you'd rather use the "books" for display purposes only.

NOTE ABOUT UPCYCLING: Because I use discarded pianos, many of which are 50-100 years old, each piece by nature will have some minor defects and show some signs of "wear and tear." They may also have extra holes in them (usually from screws) or appear somewhat dirty, despite my knuckle-scraping efforts to get them clean. (Solid wood pieces get a sink bath, but felt pieces can only be scrubbed with a dry wire or nylon brush.) Not only that, but each piece varies slightly from the next, making your purchase a one-of-a-kind. Any parts that are not indigenous to the piano are purchased new; only the piano parts are upcycled.
