These patterns (incorporating both cross stitch and blackwork) are inspired by traditionally embellished designs for the "hamsa" – a hand-shaped symbol of luck and protection that is popular among Muslims, Jews, and Christians throughout the Middle East. The PDF includes charts for two different hamsas -- one with an eye, one without -- as well as for two separate “evil eye” talismans. There are a few fractional stitches, which can be more easily worked on evenweave fabric, but aida could also be used.
Stitch count (each hamsa): 48 wide x 77 high.
Approximate size (each hamsa): 3½ x 5½ inches on 14-count aida or 28-count evenweave; 3 x 5 inches on 16-count aida or 32-count evenweave.
This is a PDF file of an embroidery pattern, not a finished product. Once payment has been made, you will be sent a link via Etsy that will lead you to a downloadable PDF. Cliffside Stitches PDFs include an explanation of the historical/cultural background of the design, clear charts, suggested DMC floss colors, tips for using the design to create smaller projects, and photos of finished models.
