WWII U.S. Navy “Dress Blues” Uniform

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor back in 1941, Alan Leier joined most of his buddies down at the armed forces recruiting office. While some of the guys joined the Army and a few joined the Marines, Alan had always thought the Navy was the place for him. He had spent all of his young life on the plains of Kansas, far from the sea. Besides that, he really like the sailor uniform--there was something about those bell-bottom slacks. After the war Hank got a job in the Garment District in New York delivering racks of clothing and he did that for twenty years. In 1965 while he and his wife were packing up to move to another apartment, he found his old Navy uniform and that sparked an idea in his head. The next day he stopped by a fashion designer friend of his and showed him his old Navy bell-bottoms. After telling him that the Navy bellbottoms were so comfortable, he thought they’d be perfect for the emerging counter-culture fashion scene. A few months later, kids were buying bell-bottom jeans like hotcakes and the rest is history.
