A charming set made by the Hollinshead & Kirkham pottery at their Unicorn Works in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent between 1933 and 1942.

The elegant 'shabby chic' cup and saucer-cum-teaplate is known as a Tennis Set, and enables the user to hold their tea and their sandwich or teacake with just one hand.

This one has a dainty tapering shape to the cup with horizontal ridges and an angular art deco handle; the teaplate has a hollow for the cup and a crescent shape for the snack - and a neat triangular tip to the plate provides a natty thumb rest.

Both pieces are decorated in traditional style with chintzy polychrome floral posies on the plate, and both inner and outer surfaces of the cup; the rims have ornate gilt borders.

The set is in excellent condition with no damage; the bases are marked with the H&K Tunstall Unicorn backstamp in use from 1933-42, B, 12, and 756 A.

The cup measures 7 cm/2.75" high, and the teaplate is 20.5 cm/8" long. The weight is 350 gms, and estimated packaged weight is 750 gms.
