Featured in this listing is an old salt glaze crock by Western Stoneware Company. This crock features a wire handle with wooden dowel and a lid that is chipped, as you can see in the pictures.

The CROCK hold 2 1/2 QUARTS (10 CUPS) = 5LBS. The crock measures approximately 7 ½ inches tall with the lid, 6 ½ inches in diameter and weighs approximately 5 pounds.

This crock is marked on the bottom, “WESTERN STONE WARE CO. PLANT” and “5 LB.” The crock does not feature the tell-tale Maple Leaf mark of the Monmouth Plant, and we cannot find a plant number anywhere else. The lid is marked on the underside, “5 LB. B” and only visible in a rubbing. Western Stone ware was created in 1906 when seven stoneware companies merged. Each company had their own plant number, but because we can’t find one on this crock, we are not sure if it’s from Plant 1(the original Monmouth Pottery Company) or just which one. There were pieces that did not have the Maple Leaf marks and even some that were completely unmarked.

The crock is done is a salt glaze and is worn and has been used. Even the wire handle and wooden dowel shows wear. The lid, as mentioned above, has two big bites out of the edge, but often the lid was completely lost over the years. The top edge of the crock has a chip, (seen in the pictures) and the bottom edge has the same type of chip. The inside is sound but does have crazing. Based on our research, we date this crock to the early days of Western Stoneware, 1910-1920.

These rustic crocks make for great kitchen utensil holders, flower pots, home décor and storage. We are very excited to have this unique piece of stoneware in our shop! We hope you love it!
