Bees in the Island's Valley, 2010
Plate: 10-1/2 x 9 inches; Paper: 18 x 15 inches

To make a mezzotint I handrock a copper plate with a tool called a rocker (for hours....:) until the plate is full of texture that will hold a tremendous amount of ink. I then scrape the image in a reductive manner into the texture of the plate using a scraper. It is a time consuming process, but one which yields incredibly intense, velvety blacks and subtle gradations of tone.

This image is part of a series of mezzotints called "Overwintering" made in Iceland in 2009-10.
