Yolanda gave her husband a lovely gift, a wonderful cup marked "present," to remind him that it was a gift from her at every sip of his morning coffee. It had bright hand painted flowers and gold letters, and he cherished it, using it all his life. Over the many years of washing and use, the gold on the letters wore off and became white, like the gold of Yolanda's hair, but the cup and Yolanda remained cherished, forever.

Perhaps that is the story behind this cup; it was a typical Victorian motif to have "present" inscribed on cups to remind the receiver that it had, indeed, been a gift from someone. The gilding on the letters is still faintly there, but almost entirely worn off. The hand painted floral design, however, is almost entirely intact with all it's bright and flowery impact! The flower itself and a leaf have a background of pale orange and pale olive and are highlighted and outlined in violet red, a favorite Victorian shade (I have a lovely Victorian serving pieces with this color listed for sale right now, too). The flower buds and stems are all in the violet red.

The cup measures just under 3" high and is 3" in diameter. There are a few manufacturer's flaws in the porcelain--a few tiny dark spots here and there, but other than the wear to the paint there is no other damage I can find. The piece is unsigned but likely made in Germany; most of this type were made there. The luster ware plate shown in one photo is not included in this listing; it was just a nice background for the shot.

A sweet , sweet cup from the 1880s with a message that could be used as a gift, or as a zen meditation: you decide!
