I came across this log in an on-line estate sale. The owner said that his father or brother brought it back from the Sonoran Desert sometime in the late '70's.
They had intended to turn it into a bowl, but had never found the time.

Desert Ironwood (Olneya tesota) is, as it's name implies, extremely hard and heavy. When the log arrived I could see that it had been almost hacked from it's tree with an obviously dull chainsaw.
I wasn't sure what would come out once I began working it but eventually settled on something which highlighted it's smooth heartwood while keeping the contrasting bark and sapwood intact.

Hours and days of sanding, polishing, and buffing brought out the natural lustre for which this material is known.
To make the color pop a bit more I rubbed a few drops of pure tung oil into my hands and then rubbed it into the surface of the piece, being careful to leave the gray exterior unfinished.

It can stand on it's butt end or be viewed lying flat on it's back.
