Victorian Black Glass Buttons - Davy Crockett

Lot of five original Victorian era black glass large buttons with brass shanks. These are really quite a mystery to me -- the image pressed on the glass appears to me to be a man in a coonskin cap paddling a canoe with a tree in the background and a swan at his side, maybe an homage to Davy Crockett?? But they are English in origin, which seems kind of odd that they would feature a 19th Century American hero. I'm not sure if the glass is pressed or carved -- the images on each button are the same but the image is deeply pressed or carved into each one. They would look great and be really fun on a modern jacket, or would look great on a repro Civil War era sack coat as well. Really unusual 19th Century buttons -- great for the button collector!

Each button measures 7/8" wide, so these are quite large buttons. In very good vintage condition.

Please see my other 19th Century accessories at http://www.etsy.com/shop/victoriansentiments?section_id=7179692 I've got a nice selection of original Victorian jewelry too!
