Large and Very Old French Antique Canning Jar

I have lots of similar beautiful old French canning jars on my kitchen shelves. I use them for storing sugar, lentils, rice, nuts and all sorts because I think one of the nicest things is to have beautiful objects for utilitarian uses....especially if those things are vintage and/or 'repurposed.'

This very old 'canning or preserving jar is the French brand 'L'Ideale' and is made of beautiful and very thick blue-green glass...it was hand blown into a mold and the thick glass is full of bubbles. This jar has its metal latch mechanism intact , but best of all, it has its original Thick White Porcelain Top making this just a wonderful object.

This jar (which holds 2 litres) measures 14 inches tall and has a base diameter of 4 inches. It is an Extremely Rare Size. (I have photo-ed it next to a standard 75cl wine bottle for scale!) We see the 1 litre size with some regularity but this size just rarely becomes available. I secretly hope no one will buy it so I can keep it for myself!

These jars are super heavy which adds to the pleasure of using them. They weigh nearly 2 kilos or over 4 lbs each... which I hope helps you understand our shipping cost.

In excellent vintage condition with no cracks or chips, this jar will serve you for many years to come. The top is made of porcelain nearly an inch thick. The closing mechanism is somewhat rusted but still works perfectly and could be treated with WD-40 to bring it back to almost 'new.' These old jars date from the 1920s-30s when such jars were made with these porcelain tops. They are super-hard to find now.

Charming country-French accents for your home.
