This is truly an amazing antique print of “Human Body Parts”. On the outside you see the muscle structure or skin but when you lift the body part on the inside you see the bones and cardio relationships – this is true for all the body parts although not all are shown in the images – convo for more views. This multi-layer image is from the book Medicology or Home Encyclopedia of Health by Joseph G Richardson, M.D. and published by the University Medical Society in 1908 (although the print has a copyright of 1901 by E. J. Stanley). Richardson was the Professor of Hygiene at the University of Pennsylvania.

Even today this rendering of the body parts would be considered fairly accurate but in 1901 it was on the cutting edge especially for a book that was intended for home use. At the turn of the last century “home medical books” were becoming more generally common and were recognized as a “Complete Family Guide abounding in Practical Household Information on the Structure and Functions of the Human Body, the Laws of Hygiene, Diet, Accidents and Emergencies, Accessory Treatments and Remedies, Air and Exercise, Sanitary House-Building, Duties of Mothers, Care of Children, Art and Science of Nursing and Cooking, and Home Administration of Health”. The print definition, quality and colors are typical of that time period, lacking much of the clarity that is available today with offset printing, but that is what makes this print both charming and uniquely vintage 1901.

There is slight yellowing on the back of the page with definite darkening around the page edge but is in line with a book plate that is over 100 years old. Each of the flaps created to make this 3D print are all intact which is unusual as many of these early layered prints have lost their pieces to time and use. The rough edge from the binding has been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge is trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book pages measured 7’” x 10” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in a 9x12 standard frame.
