A folk art basket tray souvenir of St. Petersburg, Florida. The city name and 1939 date are written on a shell that is part of the picture. The design under the glass is a diorama, hand made with shells, cotton, metallic painted dried plants and palm trees made of wood sticks and strips of green crepe paper.
The background scene of impressionistic boats on water is on textured paper or cardboard. I think the background might be hand painted but I am not positive. I don’t see any signs of printing. The colors of delicate pinks, grays, mauve, etc., contrast well with the brighter shells and whimsical foliage.
The scene is attached by basketry in straw and grass that is tightly woven to form the tray and hold glass and picture in place. The handles have a more delicate looking open work design. The tray is about 14-½” across, end to end, and about 9-¾” from top to bottom at the center.
The scene has good, vibrant color. The painted plant material is shedding a little and small specks have scattered under the glass over the surface of the picture. There seems to be a hint of spotting on the paper here and there. The basket rim and handles are sturdy though one circle in a handle area has broken “spokes“. That handle end is slightly bent making it just a bit lower than the other. This still displays well.
