Spectacular silver luster pedestal cake basket, made by Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach, Germany, circa 1880. The grey body is ornamented with grape leaves and twisting vines and is highlighted with silver luster details and dark brownish-purple enamel on the clusters of grapes. This is a great example of the naturalistic rendering of decoration during the nineteenth century.

Although this piece can be found in N. Hudson Moore, The Old China Book, 1903, fig 117, p 174. (you can view this on http://books.google.com), described as English, it is more properly attributed to Villeroy & Boch. This was kindly pointed out to me by the moderator of this forum, where you can see other similar examples: http://precisensan.com/antikforum/showthread.php?6767-Stengods-med-flerf%E4rgade-leror-ID-Villeroy-amp-Boch-Mettlach-Tyskland/page5

Measures 7 3/4 inches high, about 10 inches diameter. Unmarked.

Overall condition is very good. There is wear to the silver luster throughout and I found one tiny chip at the point of one of the grape leaves. There are splits in the body of the foot, but these occurred in the making of the piece and are not damage.
