"Back Home" by Joe Clark HBBS. Copyright 1965. Privately printed for the Tennessee Squire Association. This book is a collection of photography of and poems about the people of the Cumberland Gap in Tennessee. Although author Joe Clark grew into a sophisticated and accomplished photographer, he wrote this book as a heartfelt tribute to his roots - the place where he grew up. Clark referred to himself as "Hill Billy Snap Shooter", and even referenced this in the name he authored this book under ("HBBS").

Back Home features large photographs on each page, accompanied by charming poems. This book is such a wonderful narrative of the people of the Cumberland Mountains, who lived a traditional mountain way of life long after most communities succumbed to modernity. We are provided with portraits of children, families, images of a wedding, work life, home life, landscapes, religion, moonshine, school days, farms, and homesteads.

"I'll build me a castle
High on a hill
With a few hound dogs
And a copper still
I'll live my life
In my own free way
And you won't find me
'Til Judgement Day"

The book is in good condition, with some soiling and light wear to the hardcover. Measures 11 1/4" x 10 1/4" and has 72 pages. A beautiful photographic collection of Appalachian life!
