Beautiful Diagonal stripe Rainbow Calsilica Cabochon. This was handcut by Will. This is cut from early stock from 2000, and cut in 2001

This is a fantastic Oval shaped cabochon of Rainbow Cal-silica "mined" in Mexico. This cabochon has very bold coloring and striations, and will make a fantastic focal piece. It can be wire wrapped, beadworked, bezel set or prong set, you be the artist.

When it was first introduced, this gemstone caused a big controversy . Originally the miners claimed that it was a natural occurring stone. It has now been determined to be man-made possibly created for carving/lapidary purposes. It contains a mixture of calcite, plastic and colored pigments to create bands of really bright color.
One of the leading theories is that it comes from the floor of an old ceramics factory in Mexico. It is "mined" from the build up of layer after layer of petrified glaze and ceramic clay materilas. It is similar to Fordite, which is the build up of layer after layer of paint from a Ford factory, but Rainbow Calsilica is harder and the colors are much more intense.

This stone is domed on the front and flat on the back . The sides are cut at a slight angle for ease of setting.

size - 29mm x 21mm x 4mm
weight - 20ct
