From Madge to Margaret is a 1880 book written by Carroll Winchester, a pseudonym used by a Boston author named Caroline G. Curtis. While not a classic work of literature, it is very representative of the popular fiction of its time, with the story of Madge, a woman who could perhaps be described as a somewhat restless married woman. (But Madame Bovary she is not.)

This book is available in a print-on-demand format, because the book does have some historical significance, but original hardcover copies are impossible to find. This is a probable first edition from 1880, as no reprintings are noted. The cover matches photos of a first edition owned by a university library that has pictures of their copy available online.

The book has a wonderful cover and is 297 pages long. At the back of the book are several pages listing other popular books of the time being sold by the publisher, Lee and Shepard.

An nice copy of a very rare book, it would be a great addition to the library of a serious antiquarian collector, or a wonderful way to begin a collection!

The cloth cover shows some rubbing, wear and soiling, but the wonderful floral cover design is bright and pretty. The tips show both rubbing and bending.

The inside cover shows some cracking at the hinge and the book is a bit cocked when viewed from the bottom. There is an ownership inscription on an early blank page. The pages show age-related tanning and some pages show faint water damage. There is minimal soiling and I did not note any rips, tears or spotting/foxing. All of the pages are securely attached. This 130+ year old book is in solid condition.

From Madge to Margaret - 1880 first edition - Carroll Winchester - Extremely rare find
