Hand stitched orca/killer whale soft sculpture for display or as a gentle, heirloom toy. This whale is made from repurposed velveteen and white shimmery linen, and stuffed with locally sourced wool roving. A featherweight piece of silk gauze, sashiko-stitched in place, serves as the saddle across his back, which along with the dorsal fin, has a different shape for every individual. Researchers use the saddle shape to help identify individuals and pods in the wild. Just over 11" long, this whale is one of a kind and handmade with care.

Orcas can be found in every ocean of the world, from polar seas to equatorial waters, but visitors and locals alike flock each year to see the resident populations of Johnstone Strait and other areas along Vancouver Island. Orcas can be playful and inquisitive, often approaching boats for a better look, or showing off acrobatic displays. Salmon-eating resident orcas live in matriarchal pods of up to 25, although you may also spot smaller groups of transient orcas moving through. Transients have more wide ranging areas, and usually prefer other sea mammals instead of fish.

All items are made and stored in a smoke and pet-free home.
