Back in the days of Ancient Rome, the Gladiators believed that the color of the beets were the cause of their power. Folklore goes that beets were good for the blood because they were deep red and if eaten, the beets would improve the Gladiators strength!

Not from a mold, this tile is hand~sculpted and hand~pressed using high~fire stoneware and a multitude of overlaying high~fire glazes. The hand~pressed background allows light to playfully cast shadows of depth. The high relief sculpted beet and leaves are built individually one element at a time, therefore, unique in character with ever-so-slight variations. Each tile is numbered and signed by me.

The tile measures approximately 4 x 6 inches and the base is approximately 5/8 inches thick.
