A couple of years back while visiting friends in TN, I got to spend a day in the woods with my camera and saw. I cut a couple of 'twisties' down to make into walking sticks. A twisty is a small tree sapling that is being choked off by a neighboring vine. This particular one was a little short on good wood and so became a spoon instead.

I'm not certain of the wood specie (hackberry, I think), but it certainly was hard and tough to carve. I had the idea of carving it into a double helix but after starting the carving process that idea went out the window. I would carve a spell on it and set it aside for a couple of months, pick it back up for another go... until finally after two years it is finished.

It is a bit hefty at 12 1/2" long by 3" at its widest. Not a functional spoon... but an interesting one. And if anyone ever says anything disparaging about your cooking skills you can hold it like a club and threaten them with it.
