Here is presented a stunningly beautiful replica of a famous binding decorated with a classic Celtic Knot design stamped in gold. This is Volume XX from a set titled "The Great Events by Famous Historians", issued in 1915 strictly as a limited 'Members' Edition' for The National Alumni.

In the book it states: "The binding of this volume is a facsimile of the originalon exhibit in the Bibliotheque Nationale. This is a prize modern binding, exhibited at the Paris Exposition. It was executed and displayed by P. Ruban, from whom it was acquired by the Bibliotheque Nationale."

The binding is handsome imitation leather of a rich, deep green color. The mosaic design on the front board is in gold. the rear board is decorated in blind (stamped without color) The design of the spine, with title and decorative embellishments in gold, is the same as that of all other volumes in the set. The top page edges are gilt, while the fore-edges and bottom edges remain untrimmed. The book has a handsome frontispiece which is a sepia reproduction of a painting by Wojciech Kossak titled "Red Sunday in St. Petersburg Square". There are two other plate illustrations in the book: 1) "In the Batteries at Port Arthur" - after a painting by George Scott ; 2) "The Last VOyage of Henry Hudson" - after the painting by John Collier.

Size: 6 1/4" x 9 1/4" (octavo); xxvi + 422 pages -

CONDITION: Nicely preserved, clean and presentable with the following noted: A bookworm has nibbled along the front hinge creating a small runnel and threetiny excavations in the endpapers - there is a tiny pinprick hole in the gutter of the fron exterior joint; top edge gilding a bit dulled; else in lovely condition with the binding being exceptionally well-preserved; The book remains essentially unread with many of the leaves still unopened. (leaves still joined)
