3' x 3' square, this particular quilt pattern is known as "Kaleidoscope". Please convo to indicate what color palette you would like your custom barn square created in.

Lead time: four weeks (sufficient time is needed for paint and urethane to dry before being packaged and shipped)

Barn Squares add color and charm to your home. They are typically placed on the exterior of barns but also look wonderful on houses, studios, garden sheds and any other space needing a little pizzaz. While they are made to weather the exterior elements barn squares also look wonderful inside your home displayed as a painting.

Each barn square is created with sign maker's board (MDO is designed for exterior use with waterproof glue), treated with two coats of exterior primer, painted with exterior latex paint, and then top coated with a water based spar urethane.

Barn Quilts are hand painted works of art. They are top coated to extend their life in exterior elements however they are transitory in nature with a limited lifespan in exterior elements. How long they last will depend on the severity of the exterior elements. The harshest element is direct afternoon sun. For best results follow care instructions and enjoy the barn quilt’s beauty in all its stages of life.

History of Barn Squares:
Folk art was a key part of many cultures and as groups arrived to the new world they brought with them these traditions. Many groups like the Amish and Mennonites painted designs on doors, walls, and other household items. In the 1830’s, as paint became cheaper and more readily available Pennsylvania Dutch farmers began painting colorful star patterns and designs on their barns. These designs were believed to ward off bad spirits, add blessings, and honor tradition. We know these today as Hex Signs.

While Barn Squares are similar in nature they are a modern day phenomena and a grassroots public arts movement. It all started with a woman in Adams County, Ohio, who made and hung a painted quilt on her barn in honor of her mother and her Appalachian heritage. The idea expanded as a way to invite visitors to travel through the countryside. This beautiful tribute to heritage continued to spread throughout Appalachia and continues to spread through communities across the country.
