Rare Original Antique 1818 The Port Folio - A Monthly Journal Conducted by Oliver Oldschool, ESQ. Vol VI July-December 1818 Philadephia Published By H Hall J. Maxwell, printer.

There is a 6 page preview and scathing review of Mary Shelley's original Frankenstein book of 1818. The review is not complimentary of the book and also doesn't name Shelley as the Author - instead refers to the author by saying " The writer as we understand, a female: this is an aggravation of that which is the prevailing fault of the novel". Not favorable opinion of the writings of a female author.

The book also has writings about Golownin's Narrative - The late Matthew Boulton - Life of Machiavel - and much more. There are loose engravings that appear in a few of the photos. I believe some of these were the work of John Bulloch Souter.

An interesting piece of history. The book is in poor shape as you can see in the photos. There is damage to the cover, pages, some a loose pages, water damage, etc. The format of the book is different because it looks to be a compilation of portfolios of the period. So the pages run from 1 to 72, then 41 to 472, then 73 to 84 with page 84 having some damage where one column is unreadable. Missing probably 3-4 pages at end of book. The Frankenstein review is all complete. The pages have foxing but it is readable up til the damage on page 84.

A very cool piece of literary history and a great find for a fan of Frankenstein.
I tried to find another book like this to reference and I was unable to locate another one like it. It would appear to be a very early and rare copy of this journal.
