Disarmingly large and graphic, this five-color lithograph on heavy paper stock was printed in 1960 and was originally sold through LIFE magazine as a mail-order promotion. At the time, new oceanographic research allowed LIFE magazine to produce gorgeous illustrations of the Earth's undersea topography. Set against a rich, black background, the hemispheres of the Earth stand out like a work of minimalist, geometric art. Three paragraphs of information, set symmetrically in fully justified gothic/grotesk knockout type beneath the circles, explain the process of data collection that went into envisioning the submarine planet.

Will perfectly adorn up the wall of a design-oriented space collector, map lover, or lithographile. Would also make a lovely accent for the well-curated retail boutique.

Copyright 1960 by TIME inc.
