Vintage Set - Moon and Celestial Globes

This is a set that is extremely hard to find!! Although there are moon globes around, the celestial globes are few and far between!! I put these two together as a set as they are very hard to find as it is and paired it is almost impossible!! It is made up of a Moon Globe Bank along with a vintage 1970 6" Celestial Globe made for Replogle by Scan Globe in Denmark.

This is a great little moon globe that doubles as a bank. The scale is 1 inch = 860 miles and this globe labels the lunar impact and the lunar soft landing sites. Although this is a bank it is the same size as the Replogle moon globes of the same era are. This is a 6" globe which stands approximately 8.5" high and the base is 4" wide at the bottom This Moon Bank Globe was actually produced by Robert I. Johnson, Director and Richard M. Grossman and staff as Cartographers for the Adler Planetarium and Asronomical Museum. Scale 1:22,809,600 or 1 inch = 360 miles. Replogle was commissioned in 1963 to produce these great globes for the museum.

The earliest site is Lunik 2 by the USSR on September 13, 1959 with the last site being Luna 9, February 3, 1966 also by the USSR. The globe lists all of the USA Ranger missions as well as some of the Surveyor missions. All the landing sites are marked by a designated symbol as either Impact or soft landing. The globe labels everything on the moon. This is a lunar globe that fails to give credit to the Russian photographs of the far side. This is evidence of the cold war period in which this globe was produced. This globe features a half meridian without detail and finished in a matt gold!!

The 6" celestial orb in a beautiful bold blue and gold coloring identifies constellations, the Milky Way and much more. The Globe is hollow metal and lithographed. It features a half meridian without detail and finished in a matt gold!!

Celestial Globes are much more uncommon than the Terrestrial globes or even the moon globes as globe manufacturers produced fewer models.

The Moon Globe is in fair to good condiion. There are several dents and scratches scattered throughout and the color of the base has faded due to age. (See fourth picture) The Celestial Globe is in excellent condition. I cannot find any dents or dings or loss of paint!! There may be a few small scratches but nothing at all noticable and nothing that detracts from the unique look of this set!!!

This is one set of globes you want to take home today!!

As always, ENJOY!!!
