Fitzroy is Melbourne's oldest suburb. Although for a long time now it has had both a mix of the bohemian and the middle class about it, there are still many poor and struggling people who live in the government housing which straddles the corner of the famous Brunswick and Gertrude Streets. One day I was waiting at the lights and saw a very sad and embittered old man waiting at the crossing. Nothing unusual about that, except that he was wearing a black Chanel t-shirt. It was the strangest juxtaposition I had ever seen. I wondered whether was aware of the connotation of what he was wearing, or whether he was just glad to have something covering his back.

The Chanel Man has been painted onto found plywood using acrylic paint, and then cut out and sanded. This is my third attempt to capture the man that I saw that day, so he is actually entitled "Chanel Man No.3" on the back. He is about 10 inches (26 cm) in height and has a metal hanging device.

If you would like to know more about him, please contact me.
