Magda Toilet Cream, Countie of Boston, 1890s, Porcelain Pot, Porcelain Jar, Blue and White, Rare Jar, Collectible

This is an AMAZING piece. It is a small porcelain pot with the lid. It is from the late 1800's, probably around 1890. I'm always SO amazed when I find something of this age, in this kind of condition. It is absolutely beautiful, with no cracks, chips or crazing. The glaze is still shiny (as you can see from the glare in the photos...also see note below). There are three sections of writing on the jar:

1. Magda Toilet Cream" made by C. J. Countie & Co. Chemists Boston USA. (largest, most ornate section, front of the jar)
2. An Exquisite Communion of rare Blossoms
3. A Dainty Luxury for the Skin

The lid still even has some of the paper that was used to seal the jar on it (again, see photos). This item is VERY rare, especially with the lid and paper and as was mentioned before, in this kind of condition. This is a MUST HAVE for any collector of antique pots, bottles or jars.

Update: One of the Countie family members was kind enough to contact me and offer more information about this beautiful jar. Here's what she told me:

'My Grandfather Francis' two Uncle's John and Charles started this business in the late 1800's. They called it MAGDA toilet cream. They were Chemists in the beauty business and developed this wonderful cream. Beacause it was in such demand, Cheeseborough Company, which is now Pond's bought the formula and called it Pond's Cold Cream. They used the porcelain jar back in those days because of it's lower cost.

Plus the packaging was very important when buying a rare product in those days. I know one of the Uncles was also a wonderful artist and designed the Jar. I have seen the jars online but never in your condition. You truly have the best jar I have ever seen, even of those owned in my family. To have the paper on the lid is unheard of. Your jar is in much better condition than any jar I know of that exists and is definitely very rare and beautiful. I would value it at least at $150.00.

I took very good care of mine because I ended up working in the beauty Industry for over 30 years. Through the years my mother would display my jar on her mantle piece . Everyone always had such an interest in how beautiful the jar (pot) was. I love the sayings on the jar. I have seen people on line asking for a cover to the jar, but other than that, have not seen any others. Best regards to you.'

Isn't that lovely!? I had to share that with you all, I know I always love to know the history and story of a piece as special as this one.

Approx measurements: 3" x 3 3/4"

NOTE: In all of the photos, there are white spots on the left hand side of the jar...this is glare from a window and is not a flaw in the piece.
