This set of two wonderfully charming books were published by D. Appleton and Company in 1881. the set includes two volumes:

1. Household Hints by Emma Whitcomb Babcock
2. The Home Garden by Ella Rodman Church

(don't you just love the authors' names?)

Both titles are full of old-fashioned tips that can be useful today. Here are just a few of them:

- the best way to dye silk to get that "old gold" look is to make a dye out of hot water and green horseradish leaves

- the best way to scrape a kettle or pan is with a clam shell (never a knife)

- to make stale crackers fresh again, just pop them in a hot oven for just a few minutes

Appleton's Home Books -- with all their charm and quaint language -- remind us that homemaking can and should be an art.

Like most vintage books, these editions show signs of their age. There is some discoloration of the end papers. Overall, however, the books are in good condition with strong spines and very readable pages.
