Part 2 of my Scared Fire Scared Heart triptych, a box containing a mobile metal Mary I found in Florence, and a red resin flaming sacred heart inlay in the background.

* About the Triptych:

Though not religious myself, I've for a long time been drawn to and interested in religious iconography as well as ancient relics, amulets and rituals. And so these pieces were an 'aboutissement' and an exploration of those interests...

The image of the burning sacred heart has followed me for ages, so that was an almost automatic given... this I could go on about for a long time, but suffice to say it's an image that is very meaningful to me, and has many different connotations... passion - in both the emotional and religious senses - for one... martyrdom... sanctity... purification.. rock and roll... etc...

I found Mary at the bottom of a box in a flea market in Florence... another icon that has a lot of meanings... most importantly: grace. A state many try to cultivate... She most definitely needed to move... sticking her in resin/formaldehyde was not an option... the tinkling sound she makes as she bounces around inside the box is meant to have an effect similar to that of a bell... a gentle 'wake up'...a reminder.

The idea of the matchbox cracked me up when I thought of it... to literally light the fire...so it remained, to lighten things up a bit..

The image of the beaten up sacred heart 'floating' in resin was inspired by a sacred relic here in Montreal: the heart of brother Andre (who, incidentally, was finally canonized on the same day I finished the locket).

The whole process, from first glimmer of an idea to final pieces, took about 3 months... bits of ideas (both conceptual and technical) came from many sources (dreams, art, walks in Florence, visits to churches, books, etc...) and I added them to my sketchbook and modified the designs as needed...

On all three pieces, the latin words "sanctus ignis sanctus viscus" (sacred fire sacred heart) are stamped on the sides...
