Textile stamps or blocks are used across Asia to decorate fabric with imprinted designs of ink or batik. This stamp was painstakingly carved out of pear wood. All the stamps we carry are quite old, estimated between the 1930's to the 1960's, but it is hard to tell for sure how old any one stamp might be. These stamps have been considered as rejects by printing workshops in Afghanistan. Yet, to us they might still hold functional use or be considered as small art objects.

Stamping arrived in the United States as a craze for hobbyists and stayed on, with increasingly interesting variations in patterns, uses, and sizes. This art has ancient roots all over Asia, Africa and native cultures around the world. In some places, stamping is done with simple natural shapes, while in others, like Indonesia, they have become a highly developed art, with intricate metal designs embedded into the wood for batik patterns. This carved wood stamp was used to print ink on fabric, but many of our customers have bought them for use on paper and pressing into clay or soap.

Although this stamp has been washed, there may be dye or wax remnants still on it. Make sure you clean it well before using on paper or fabric. The stamp may be scrubbed with a stiff brush using warm water and soap.

These stamps are quite beautiful just as they are. I have several that I keep as art pieces- plate hangers work well to hang them or they can usually stand on their own.
