About This Image:

More than the image, the story here lies with the person in it.

I rarely work by shooting other people in staged shots. There are two reasons for this. One is that since I construct my images, the actual background the finished photo will have likely does not exist at the time of shooting. At best I may have the idea for it so it requires acting on top of posing to get the emotional scope and, good physically expressive acting, as many of you know, is not easy to find.

Second I usually like the images to speak through the process and not through an idea i have going in. So, it seems that so many of the images I create come out of "off' shots or extras that were not meant for use.

On occasion I was fortunate enough to work with someone like Irene.

She is Ukrainian. She literally won a form of lottery to be able to leave her country to come here. There is a n unmistakable melancholy in her that seems to come through in all that she says and does. The first time we spoke of working together she said she had one request, "I do not want to look pretty in your pictures." It was the darkness of some of my work that spoke to her. I promised and we shot an entire day. Images that I am still working with to this day some 3 years later. This is the first one I have posted here on Etsy. It was not a planned image. An outtake from a series of shots I took while she simply moved and let her emotion take over.

The idea of her "rusting" was easy to imagine. Based upon our conversations and my thoughts of what carrying so many mixed feelings about ones own life, or where one calls home, must be like. The holes in our soul from experiences we cannot retrace. The uncertainty of the heart when the heart has never known openness.

This was the first image I finished to show Irene. She loved it and wanted it printed for her wall. It was perfect she said. And somehow, I already knew that was true.

"“From the Inside Out"

It's not the 98% water that causes the problem you see
It's all the defense mechanisms and armor we build
Riveted by each troubled experience
To a heart unwilling to face the outside pounding
And then when that is not enough
We expand our defenses outward
Plating every limb, covering every joint
Filling the hollow with alloys instead of allies
Making a junk heap of this once pristine expanse
And then the rains come
From the inside out
The 98% that doesn't mix with this architecture
Because we are supposed to flow
We are suppose to be free
Not locked inside this cage
Now rusting around us
With no way out and
No way in
